A winter tour of Yellowstone National Park is quite different from any other season's tour. Much of the wildlife gather around the steaming hot pools and geysers which generate warmth and clear ground. Bison become frosted, shaggy beasts, easily spotted as they take advantage of the more accessible vegetation on the thawed ground. Warm ground, steam, and hot water create microclimates where plants grow and animals are drawn for food and warmth.
